Tatars are nomadic Turk tribes which settled in Russia, especially along the Volga. Tatars came to Finland along with the Russian Army when Finland became a subject of Russian Empire in 1809. Tatars were among the Russian troops stationed at Finland. Some of them stayed back in Finland and made it their homeland. In the Winter war and the Continuation war, when Russia invaded Finland in 1939, Finnish Tartars joined the war to protect Finland. 9 of them were martyred in the war. Finnish Tartars had another special ability which was very useful in the war- they knew Russian language. With this special skill, they were used to propaganda and prisoner interrogations.
